This panel was above the main image niche set in the central pillar of Cave 2 at Nan Xiangtangshan. It has groups of figures seated and engaged in preaching and discussion at either side of a central Buddha under a jeweled canopy.
The petal shaped lappets at the base represents sections of a curtain or canopy at the top of the niche. Aside from the central Buddha nearly all of the visible figures are bodhisattvas, except for a group of several Buddhas seated in the upper right corner of the relief panel.
Purchased from Lai Yuan and Co. (C.T. Loo, NY), 1921. |
