Freer/Sackler Gallery F1968.45
Gift of Eugene and Agnes Meyer

The bodhisattva stands upright holding a large lotus bud in his hands. The left hand support the base of the flower while the right is placed over the top. The figure is modeled with a strong sense of volume and with finely finished surface details. The figure is sparely attired in long skirt and scarf draped over the shoulders and down the sides of the body. His long hair hangs over his shoulders in spiraling strands. His torso is bare but for the scarf and a necklace. He does not have the heavy, long chains of jewels and elaborate crown frequently depicted on bodhisattvas.
This sculpture is closely related to the three large sculptures, two bodhsattvas and one pratyekabuddha, in the University of Pennsylvania Museum.
The statue was covered with a thick brownish layer believed to be oil or varnish over paint and gesso ground. The surface was cleaned down to the paint layer in 1971. |
